Behaviour Consultations

Need a dog behaviourist?  Sarah is a full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC).  She can assist you with your dog’s problems via a behaviour consultation.

A consultation (lasting approximately two hours) will be arranged once a veterinary referral has been obtained.  During the consultation scientific and reward-based methods will be put into place to work towards achieving a mutually agreeable goal.  Both you and your veterinary surgeon will receive a copy of a written behaviour modification programme.  Email and telephone support is included in the initial consultation package and sometimes one hour follow up sessions are recommended to ensure that your pet is benefiting from the programme put into place.

Dog behaviour training can be a life-line for some dogs, so it’s important that you choose a specialist that is qualified and experienced in a broad range of cases.  Sarah is a fully qualified Clinical Animal Behaviourist.  This means her fees may be fees may be reimbursed by your pet insurance policy if behaviour is covered.

Puppy Training

If taught correctly, your puppy will learn very quickly to respond to your cues through love, affection and rewards. Puppy training will help build a lasting bond between dog and owner, a bond built through trust and not intimidation. Our main goal is to create a happy and confident dog, but one that is also responsive to our requests.

We have many years’ experience of training puppies and we run our classes on a regular basis.  Training dogs of any age is possible, with patience, consistency and kindness.

Topics covered in our puppy training classes include how to have a dog that will relax on command, sit, lay-down, walk nicely on a loose lead, come back when called, not jump up, and have general good manners.  There will always be an opportunity to ask any puppy-related questions on areas you are struggling with e.g. play biting.  We also give lots of guidance on socialisation and how to avoid behaviour problems developing.

We allow a maximum of 6 dogs per class.

Improvers & Advanced Training

We run more advanced courses, for those who want to build on the foundations our beginner courses offer.  We believe a 6-week course is a really good starting point, but it’s so beneficial to progress your training to proof your dog’s responsiveness in a variety of challenging scenarios.

We train outdoors and in a ‘real life’ fashion, so exercises geared up to real-life environments, not whether your dog can walk around a village hall in the “heel” position.

Topics on this course will be tailored to the class’ requirements, and special attention will be given to ensuring you can get your dog’s attention when there are distractions present.

We will teach exercises such as:

*Recalling your dog past and away from distractions
*Proofing your dog’s “sit” and/or “down” position
*Loose lead walking with real-life challenges
*An emergency stop
*Walking in the “heel” position with no lead
*Send to a bed or mat
*Self-control exercises

Adult Dog Training

A well-trained dog is a joy to live with.  Whatever age you acquire a dog, there can be training issues that you may need help with.   Adult dogs, if untrained, can have a number of annoying habits such as jumping up at people, stealing food, not coming back when called, chasing joggers or cyclists and pulling on the lead.

Training dogs of any age is possible, with patience, consistency and kindness.

Suitable for dogs that need a touch-up on general training, or maybe you have a rescue dog that needs the basics.  Topics covered in our dog training classes include how to have a dog that will relax on command, sit, lay-down, walk nicely on a loose lead, come back when called, not jump up, and have general good manners.

This course is not suitable for dogs with aggression issues towards dogs or people.  For these dogs, a behaviour consultation would need to be arranged.

We allow a maximum of 6 dogs per class.
